According to a recent report, the number of Manhattan residents living alone in their residence has declined during the last decade.

The trend comes in contrast to the national movement, as single living increased to an unprecedented level in parts of the West and South, the Associated Press report states.

The AP report, which analyzed 2010 census data, claims that rising rent costs and the perception that Manhattan has become more family friendly are among the reasons solo living figures have declined.

In 2000, 48 percent of Manhattan households had only one inhabitant. The figure then dropped to 46.3 percent in 2010. Nationally, the level reached an all-time high of 27 percent during 2010.

"I see the rise of living alone as one of the great demographic changes in modern history," New York University sociologist Eric Klineberg told the AP. ''It may be the last great social change that we haven't fully come to terms with."

Outside of Manhattan, prices of homes for sale have fluctuated recently. This trend may have propelled more potential property owners into the housing market that had previously been on the fence.
